CraftStudio!!!

While wandering around the internet you find some neat things. I certainly did. This “game” I found is called CraftStudio, which is a bit hard to explain. You see, it is a multiplayer “game” by Sparklin Labs that lets you make little interactive movies or games together (or alone). The project had a crowd-funding operation a few months back and was successful.

It comes with an easy to use sprite editor, a scripting engine and a world editor right out of the box. In the sprite editor, you can make models out of blocks of people and characters and at anytime your buddy can jump in and help you along, almost like a team sculpture or a Minecraft creation in multiplayer mode. The scripting language is designed to be easy to use so you don’t need to learn C++. In the world editor you can make your game world out of the blocks you modeled using a grid system. Of course, if you ever need any help or run into trouble, you can use their forum.

The software sounds similar to GameMaker but it is more designed for 3D games (and of course the online creation aspect is new). You can make many, many different types of games with CraftStudio. In the future Sparklin Labs would like to add a physics engine, a dynamic lighting system and multiplayer support (in games created with the software). You will also be able to eventually upload your creations on the official store or post them on the internet on your own.

To showcase what can be done with the engine, Sparklin Labs is making a humorous dungeon- crawler with it codenamed “Project Waffle” cause waffles are awesome I guess although I haven’t heard much from it since it was announced. Well, waffles are awesome. As you can see, this project is looking quite promising and you can try it for free or, like Minecraft, buy the full version in it’s alpha stage and watch it progress. The full version includes more scripting options, you get the latest updates, you can more easily export your creations and in the future you will have access to the community content library full of models and more for you to use. Check it out!
